The word 'dating' does not appear in the Bible — marriages were typically arranged in biblical times. But the Bible provides timeless principles that apply directly to modern dating.
Foundational Principles
1. Do not be unequally yoked. 2 Corinthians 6:14: 'Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.' This does not mean you cannot be friends with non-Christians, but when it comes to a life partner, shared faith is essential. A marriage where one person follows Christ and the other does not will create fundamental tension on the deepest questions of life.
2. Guard your heart. Proverbs 4:23: 'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you flows from it.' Be thoughtful about who you give your emotional energy to. Not every attraction should be pursued.
3. Pursue purity. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5: 'It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.' The Bible reserves sexual intimacy for marriage. This includes not just intercourse but the broader category of sexual activity.
4. Seek wisdom. Proverbs 12:15: 'The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.' Invite trusted mentors, parents, and friends to speak into your relationship.
What to Look For in a Partner
- Character over chemistry. Proverbs 31:30: 'Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.' Physical attraction fades; character deepens.
- Spiritual maturity. Look for someone who is actively growing in faith — reading the Bible, praying, serving, and involved in Christian community.
- Emotional health. A person who cannot manage their anger, insecurity, or past wounds will bring those struggles into the relationship.
Red Flags
- They pressure you sexually.
- They isolate you from friends and family.
- They are possessive, controlling, or manipulative.
- They do not respect your boundaries.
- They are not interested in spiritual growth.
The Goal of Dating
Biblical dating is not recreational — it is intentional. The purpose is to discern whether this person is a suitable life partner. Date with purpose, protect your heart, and trust God's timing.
