Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit to every Christian for the purpose of serving others and building up the church. They are not natural talents (though God often aligns gifts with talents)βthey are supernatural endowments given at the moment of salvation.
Where Are Spiritual Gifts Listed?
The New Testament provides several gift lists, though none claims to be exhaustive:
- Romans 12:6-8 β Prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership, mercy.
- 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 β Wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, interpretation of tongues.
- Ephesians 4:11 β Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers.
- 1 Peter 4:10-11 β Speaking gifts and serving gifts.
Key Principles
1. Every believer has at least one gift. 1 Corinthians 12:7 says: 'To each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.' No Christian is ungifted.
2. Gifts are for serving, not for status. Spiritual gifts are tools, not trophies. They exist to build up others, not to elevate ourselves.
3. No gift is superior. Paul uses the body metaphor to emphasize that every gift is necessary: 'The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!"' (1 Corinthians 12:21).
4. Love is non-negotiable. 1 Corinthians 13 sits between two chapters on spiritual gifts for a reason. The most spectacular gifts are worthless without love.
How to Discover Your Gifts
- Serve and experiment. Try different areas of ministry and notice where you are effective and energized.
- Ask others. The people around you can often see your gifts more clearly than you can.
- Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal and develop your gifts.
- Study Scripture. Familiarize yourself with the gift lists and reflect on which ones resonate with your experience.
