Can we trust the Bible? Is it just an ancient book of myths, or is it the inspired Word of God? Here is the evidence.
1. Manuscript Evidence
The Bible has far more manuscript evidence than any other ancient document. There are over 5,800 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, plus over 10,000 Latin manuscripts and thousands more in other languages. By comparison, Homer's Iliad has about 1,800 copies, and most ancient works survive in fewer than 20.
The Dead Sea Scrolls (discovered in 1947) contained copies of Old Testament books dating to 200-100 BC — and they matched our modern texts with remarkable accuracy, confirming that the Scriptures were faithfully transmitted over millennia.
2. Archeological Confirmation
Archeology has consistently confirmed the Bible's historical claims:
- The existence of David (confirmed by the Tel Dan inscription).
- The existence of Pontius Pilate (confirmed by the Pilate Stone).
- The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (consistent with evidence at the Tall el-Hammam site).
- Pool of Bethesda and Pool of Siloam (both excavated exactly as described in John's Gospel).
Nelson Glueck, one of the greatest archaeologists of the 20th century, wrote: 'No archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference.'
3. Fulfilled Prophecy
The Bible contains hundreds of specific prophecies written centuries before their fulfillment:
- Isaiah 53 describes the suffering of the Messiah — written 700 years before Jesus.
- Micah 5:2 predicted the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
- Daniel 9 predicted the timing of the Messiah's arrival.
- Psalm 22 describes crucifixion details — written centuries before crucifixion existed as a method of execution.
4. Internal Consistency
The Bible was written by over 40 authors across 1,500 years, on three continents, in three languages — yet it tells one unified story with remarkable consistency. This is not what you would expect from a merely human collection of writings.
5. Transforming Power
The Bible has transformed more lives, inspired more art, shaped more civilizations, and endured more attacks than any book in history. It remains the world's best-selling book every single year. As Jesus said: 'Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away' (Matthew 24:35).
