Why Have a Quiet Time?

Jesus Himself modeled this practice. Mark 1:35 says: 'Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.' If the Son of God needed daily time with the Father, how much more do we?


A Simple Framework: SOAP


- S — Scripture: Read a passage of the Bible. Start with a Psalm, a chapter from a Gospel, or a section of Proverbs. Quality over quantity—one paragraph read slowly is better than three chapters skimmed.


- O — Observation: What stands out in the passage? What does it say about God's character? About human nature? About how we should live?


- A — Application: How does this passage apply to your life today? Is there a command to obey, a promise to trust, a sin to confess, or an example to follow?


- P — Prayer: Respond to what you have read by talking to God. Thank Him, ask Him for help, confess what needs confessing, and pray for others.


Practical Tips


1. Pick a time and guard it. Morning works best for most people because it sets the tone for the day. But any consistent time is better than the 'perfect' time that never happens.

2. Start small. Ten minutes is enough to begin. Consistency beats duration.

3. Find a quiet place. Minimize distractions. Turn off your phone or use it only for a Bible app.

4. Use a journal. Writing what you learn helps you remember and process it.

5. Give yourself grace. Missing a day does not mean failure. Just pick back up the next day without guilt.
